Decorating The Home With Valentine’s Day Decor

June 26th, 2009

Valentine’s Day comes hot on the heels of Christmas, New Year and the Chinese New Year, occasions when decorations, plus special home and garden decor, are at their most abundant. While people do not generally decorate their homes extensively for Valentine’s Day, now you have got in the decoration mood, why not have a few special Valentine ornaments about the home to signify the day.

If your Valentine’s ornaments are well chosen, they may even fit into your home decor at other times too. Special Valentine ornaments can also make unusual Valentine gifts, for supplementing the roses and chocolates, or even as gifts for Mum and Dad.

There is, of course, nothing like the vast choice of Valentine ornaments as there is for Christmas. But that does not mean there are none in the stores or online; and you can always make your own. If you have children, you may even find the younger ones make you something at school.

However, assuming you want to buy special Valentine’s ornaments and decor, then here are just a few ideas of the type of things to look out for.

Ideas For Valentine Décor

Vases

If you are buying, or expecting, roses on Valentine’s Day, then an appropriately designed and tastefully decorated vase may be a choice accompaniment. A red vase in an attractive design may prove opportune for Valentine’s Day, but can also play a part for your summer cut flowers when your garden is in full bloom; that is, if it is not over adorned with Valentine Day graffiti.

Welcome Signs

As with Christmas, a cheerful welcome sign to hang on or by the front door is great way to greet people who arrive at your home on and around Valentine’s Day. By signifying your home is a place of love and romance, visitors should be immediately warmed by the greeting. Some of the best examples are also very attractive.

Sun Catchers

By their very nature, sun catchers are very cheerful and optimistic, so are ideal for a heart warming Valentine’s Day, reflecting not just the sunlight but the light coming from your heart too. Coloured in reds and pinks, and with heart shaped decorations, if you are lucky enough to find a good Valentine sun catcher, it will be an attractive feature for some time to come.

Wind Chimes

Easier to find than sun catchers, Valentine wind chimes are a good choice for those who appreciate the gentle chime of these popular indoor and outside ornaments. Again you will find heart shaped decorations are common, but you may find the occasional fairy and other decorous feature added to make the wind chime even more attractive.

Candle Holders

One of the easier types of Valentine décor to find is Valentine candle holders. Jar, tea light or pillar candle holders can all come with a Valentine theme, or you can simply choose a romantic red and buy some richly scented candles to go with them.

I am sure with a bit of thought and searching you can come up with many more ideas for Valentine Day decorations, whether to buy or to use your craft skills to make your own.

Enjoy Your Gap Year With Travel Insurance

June 7th, 2009

A Gap Year is a reverie for many. That precious year off between school and university, or increasingly these days the adult gap year - between one job and the next. Planning a gap year is provocative and thrilling - and little bit scary, all at the same time. The costs can add up, especially when you are looking at round the world airfares out of Australia, and European Contiki tours paid for by the Australian dollar.

One expense anyone planning a gap year should NOT scrimp on is tourism insurance.

Fortunately, there are specific long term travel insurance cover policies on tap. Here are some of the key features you should look for in insurance for your dream gap year:

* online policy - dealing with real dossier is so last year! Easy to read documents anytime, day or night and an email contact can be so much easier!

* greatest extent of policy – a travel policy should cover you for up to 12 months, and ideally you should be able to extend it while you are abroad

* define “dangerous sport”. Travel insurance often doesn’t cover you for “unsafe” stuff like bungee jumping, white-water rafting, diving, horse riding – yes, justified about anything which is any fun at all! Make sure your travel insurance does!

* high medical and hospital expense shelter - sure you’re not going to get sick - no one under 30 ever does right? Well actually no, wrong, but more to the point what happens if you get run over when you look the dishonor way before you cross the road? That could cost a second mortgage on your parents’ house just to get you home!

* negative cash flow death of luggage - you aren’t going to be staying in the flashiest hotels, or even private rooms at times. Have you checked the bring in of all those electronic (and oh, so easily stolen) gadgets you plan to take: digital camera, laptop etc?

* online minimize - you may be happy to say goodbye to study for a year - but make sure you shop around, especially online - there are some fantastic shabby student travel insurance deals out there! Just like the banks, the travel insurance industry wants YOU - or at least your expressly!

Although many young travelers plan to head off for their gap year without a care in the world, in fact, many more will need to line along the way. Working holiday schemes, SWAP programs and grandparents born in the UK are the gap year traveler’s best escort. A standard travel insurance policy may not cover you when you are waiting tables in a Greek taverna or pulling pints at a British pub. A solid gap year travel policy should cover you - so long as you are working legally.

Remember that all those carefully arranged plans you started with at domicile have a small chance of actually happening - gap year travel is all about spontaneity - planning to travel through China and ending up on a run aground in Goa, is just the sort of thing that happens! Your travel insurance needs to be just as flexible and cover you worldwide.

Oh and the one most grave reason you should get travel insurance for your gap year - your mother will be able to sleep at night!

Trip insurance has angered travelers and drawn state scrutiny

June 7th, 2009

Sunday, March 29, 2009

Susan Glaser

Plain Dealer Reporter

Is the nightmarish possibility of being laid off keeping you from taking the vacation of your dreams?

Several travel companies are hoping to allay your fears — and then wish you bon voyage.

Cruise retailer Cruise One, with several locations in Northeast Ohio, recently added job-loss coverage to its basic travel insurance policy. If you get laid off, you can cancel the cruise with no penalty — provided you’ve purchased the insurance, the price of which varies by the cost of the cruise but starts at $35.

“You wouldn’t think something so simple could make such a difference,” said Becky Piper, who runs a CruiseOne franchise out of her Strongsville home. “My sales have skyrocketed.”

“Everyone is just so fearful,” she said. “They don’t want to make plans for six months from now if they think they might not have a job.”

To qualify for the policy, which is administered by Travel Guard, you must have been employed for a year. Information: cruiseone.com.

Ecruises.com, an online travel agency specializing in cruises, also offers job-loss protection through its basic travel insurance policy; and Ecruises is picking up the cost of the insurance.

Norwegian Cruise Line also recently added job-loss insurance to its travel insurance plan for sailings in May and beyond. Prices start at $29, depending on the fare. Information: ncl.com.

A bed-and-breakfast in Vermont is offering six free two-night getaways to people who have been unemployed for more than six months. Rabbit Hill Inn in Lower Waterford, on the New Hampshire border near St. Johnsbury, will offer a two-night freebie, dubbed the Pink Slip Getaway Giveaway, each month in April through July and again in November and December. Send a letter or e-mail by Monday, June 1, explaining your story in a page or less: Box 55, Lower Waterford Road, Lower Waterford, VT 05848 or info@rabbithillinn. com.

Ohio’s two CoCo Key water parks, in Newark and Cincinnati, are offering a price break to workers who have been forced to take unpaid time off. For $119, a family of four can spend a night at either resort, which includes two full days of water-park passes. Information: cherryvalleylodge.com or sheraton.com/cincinnatinorth.

Bugatti Veyron production run nearly sold out?

June 4th, 2009

bugatti-veryon

When Bugatti started production of the Veyron back in 2005, it was supposed to build 300 examples. For a long time, that total seemed pretty ambitious considering the seven-figure price tag on the most super of contemporary supercars, but according to Molsheim, all but 50 have been built and sold. Add to that another 150 examples of the Grand Sport roadster version and you’ve got 450. Whether special editions like the Pur Sang, Sang Noir and Hermes are counted as part of the original production figures or considered supplemental specials is insignificant, considering that only a handful of each are to be built.

The one wrinkle that has us wondering about all of these million-dollar supercars is that it was only last March when it was announced that Bugatti had sold 220 cars (of which only 132 had been built). Given how long it took them to get to 220, that seems like one heck of an order ramp-up, particularly given the state of the global economy.

The bottom line is that if you’ve been dragging your feet over whether to spend that extra million on a Bugatti or not, better make your mind up fast. Like, Veyron fast.

Republican Is Choice for Secretary of the Army

June 3rd, 2009

p>WASHINGTON — New York is not thought of as a big military state. But Representative John M. McHugh, who was selected Tuesday to be President Obama’s secretary of the Army, has long stood out among his New York colleagues for his attention to military matters.

The fate of his district, which stretches across the state’s economically beleaguered North Country, has long been tied to the Fort Drum Army post, home to the 10th Mountain Division, whose soldiers have constantly rotated in and out of Afghanistan and Iraq for the past seven years.

He has been one of Fort Drum’s staunchest advocates in Washington, using his seat on the House Armed Services Committee to protect it from closing. He has also been aggressive about working to bring military-related jobs to the 23rd District.

But the efforts of Mr. McHugh, the ranking Republican on the committee, go beyond the parochial concerns of his district. He has been a supporter of spending on major military projects like the Navy’s F-14 fighter, built for years on Long Island, and the Marines’ V-22 Osprey.

He was also among a group of Congressional leaders President Obama personally briefed in February about his plan to withdraw troops from Iraq by 2010. While Mr. McHugh was concerned that the security situation in Iraq was fragile, he said he was reassured by Mr. Obama’s promise of flexibility.

“The president’s objective to withdraw U.S. combat forces from Iraq is one that we should pray for, plan for and work toward,” Mr. McHugh said after the meeting, in a display of the moderate brand politics he is known for.

Mr. McHugh, 60, is part of a vanishing breed in the House: centrist Republicans from Northeastern states. In New York, for instance, there are just three remaining Republicans, including Mr. McHugh, in the state’s 29-member delegation in the House.

Mr. McHugh’s resignation would mean a second special House election in the state, where Democrats managed to hold on to a heavily Republican district in the Albany area this spring after the incumbent, Kirsten Gillibrand, was appointed to the Senate to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Democratic leaders in Washington and New York contend that they have a chance at capturing Mr. McHugh’s seat, although the district favors Republicans.

Barack Obama launches key Mid-East mission

June 3rd, 2009

US President Barack Obama has arrived in Saudi Arabia at the start of a Middle East tour aimed at increasing US engagement with the Islamic world.

Mr Obama will spend a few hours in Riyadh before heading for Cairo, where he will make a keynote speech.

He says he wants to open dialogue with Muslims, overcome misapprehensions, and revive Middle East peace negotiations.

Apart from a stop-over in Iraq in April, it is Mr Obama’s first time in the region since becoming president.

Barack Obama’s goal is to improve perceptions of the US and to push for a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, says BBC Diplomatic Correspondent Jonathan Marcus.

In the process he wants to make other US strategic goals in the region - like stability in Iraq and the containment of Iran - easier to achieve.

To do this he needs Arab partners and this trip takes in two key nations - Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

The Saudis are sponsors of the only comprehensive peace plan for relations between the Arab world and Israel.

Egypt is intimately involved with the Palestinian problem, acting as an intermediary between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Mr Obama needs both countries on board if he is to breathe life into the largely moribund peace negotiations, our correspondent says.

‘Action not words’

In Saudi Arabia, Mr Obama will hold talks with King Abdullah in Riyadh. As well as regional issues, Mr Obama said he would raise the issue of oil prices with the Saudi ruler.

Ahead of the visit, al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia issued an internet statement vowing to target President Obama’s convoy in Riyadh, BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner reports.

On Thursday, Mr Obama is to deliver a speech at Cairo University which he hopes will set a new tone in US-Arab relations.

After Cairo, Mr Obama will travel on to Europe for D-Day commemorations.

The tour itinerary does not include Israel but shortly before departing for Saudi Arabia, Mr Obama had a meeting with Israel’s defence minister, Ehud Barak, in Washington.

The president is reported to have used the meeting to reiterate that the US intends to be tough with Israel on the question of settlement building in the West Bank.

Israel is resisting calls to freeze building activity in all settlements, but Palestinian leaders have said there can be no progress towards peace without a halt to such construction.

Speaking to the BBC ahead of his visit, Mr Obama said he believed the US was “going to be able to get serious negotiations back on track” between Israel and the Palestinians.

He said his visit offered the US and the Islamic world the chance “to listen to each other a little bit more”.
